Theo Jansen
A Jansen "beach beast", exhibited on the Linz city square during Ars Electronica, 2005
Theo Jansen (He was born in 17 March 1948 in Scheveningen, in the Netherlands ) is an artist and kinetic sculptor living and working in the Netherlands. He builds large works - "Strandbeest" - which resemble skeletons of animals which are able to walk using the wind on the beaches of the Netherlands. His animated works are a fusion of art and engineering. In a BMW television commercial, Jansen says "The walls between art and engineering exist only in our minds."
Great choice, Sonia. Jansen is a most gifted artist with a brilliant mind.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, you might want to revise the link to the videos. When I clicked it all I saw was a dialog box suggesting that my computer had a virus (malicious spam that tries to hijack your browser and some of your visitors may fall for it).
Hi Fénix, sorry! Thanks so much for the warning. I just delete the link to the videos. I do hope you did not had any trouble with it! I will search on YouTube some video to add on the post. Thanks again!

Sensational! Some kind of "da Vinci" touch to these "machines"! (I just wonder how he can make his living on this? Must be difficult to sell these pieces of art, they will stay where you put them!)
ReplyDeleteSonia,

ReplyDeleteBy the way, Sonia, I just noticed I forgot to add a (lovely) mural to the post I published today so I updated it. I know you like murals so
here it is.

ReplyDeleteA arte existe exatamente pra nos despertar reações.
ReplyDeleteO pior tipo de arte é aquele que nos deixa indiferentes.
Maravilhosas!!!!!! Parecem criaturas do espaço.

ReplyDeleteSonia, Wow! The man is truly a genius. One of those sculptures in the video looked like it would take off and fly. I wonder how he stops them from drifting into the ocean.

All art is the expression of one and the same thing--
the relation of the spirit of man to the spirit of other men
and to the world.

Sonia, você sempre encontra uma forma bem legal de nos distrair das confusões do dia-a-dia. Adorei. Bjs!
ReplyDeleteThese works are truly amazing - I remember seeing the advertisement here in South Africa as well. Can't remember what they were advertising as I was too fascinated by these walking sculpture. He must have an incredible mind to not only envision these, but to build them as well.
ReplyDeletesonia, thanks for this great post and links to you tube, I ended up watching quite a few, just captivating!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed looking through your blog. You have some wonderful photographs and interesting posts.
ReplyDeleteStunning photos!
ReplyDeleteMy eyes are boggled!!
I absolutely love the first photo/art work. The structures look like alien beetles surfacing from the water to attack Earth.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of Theo Jansen so watched the video you linked to. There are a lot of other YouTube videos on that page as well, including links to TED talk he gave, explaining how he constructs them. Very wonderful! He hopes that these animals can live on their own in the future; right now he has to help them a lot!
