Today I want to make a homage to Oscar Niemeyer for his 100 years old. Niemeyer is the most famous Brazilian architect and he is considered one of the most important names in International Modern Architecture. Niemeyer designed the whole Brasília town, capital of the country since 1960.

The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói) is a spetacular building situated in the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and is one of the city’s main landmarks. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer with the assistance of structural engineer Bruno Contarini, the Museum is 16 meters high; its cupola has a diameter of 50 meters with three floors. The museum projects itself over Boa Viagem (“Bon Voyage,” “Good Journey”), the 817-square meter reflecting pool that surrounds the cylindrical base “like a flower,” in the words of Niemeyer. A wide access slope leads to a Hall of Expositions, which has a capacity for sixty people. Two doors lead to the viewing gallery, through which can be seen the Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain. The saucer-shaped modernist structure, which has been likened to a UFO, is set on a cliffside, at the bottom of which is a beach. (Answers.com)

AMAZING VIDEO: I bet you all will enjoy so much this creative video animation by Marc-Henri Wajnberg about the beautiful Comtemporary Art Museum in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro.
Sonia, that was great! I love that they likened it to a flying saucer, but I wish the video had taken us inside that remarkable building!!

O arquiteto maior merece a homenagem.
Esperto, hein?
Sonia, I enjoyed this very much....very cool!

Fabulous photos. You know, I learn so much about Brazil from your blog, Sonia.
ReplyDeletePS: I've tagged you over at my place.
Oscar N is certainly worth an homage! Even here in Paris we have a remarkable buiding of his design; The Communist Party Headquarters. As I understand, he is still not only 100, but still active, as well as architect as politically.
