ARNALDO POMODORO'S SCULPTURES

With this post I guess I'm starting a new series of some interestings sites I have found wandering over Internet. As a matter of fact my last post about newspaper's sculpture was the first one of this series I named "What I saw on the Internets".

Photo by New York Daily Photo

So, I saw for the first time on New York Daily Photo (Brian's blog) this amazing sculpture, "Sfera con sfera", that means "Sphere with Sphere" created by the Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro. Pomodoro was born on June 23, 1926 in Morciano, Romagna, Italy and currently lives and works in Milan. (You can see his sculptures here and here)

Some of Pomodoro's "Sfera con Sfera" can be seen in the Vatican Museums, Trinity College in Dublin, the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. and the University of California, Berkeley.

Some of the highlights include a controversial fiberglass crucifix for the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The piece is topped with a fourteen foot in diameter crown of thorns which hovers over the figure of Christ.

The sculptor also traveled to Brazil on the occasion of his participation in the 1963 São Paulo Bienal, where he was awarded the International Sculpture Prize.

  9. Hello Sonia. Thanks for visiting my blogsite. I've been away in Brighton this week and have only just got back!
Loved most of the sculptures especially the crucifix. Not sure about the first one though. Really liked the balls (as it were) and the tall thingies that looked like corn cobs.
The Tesco campaign is gathering momentum. There were photos of the demonstration and a petition outside Cheeky Normans this morning. There was the most amazing and flattering photo of the back of my head!
    Lorenzo.

  11. Oh Sonia, my dear....I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, Pomedoro...! In fact my dear Sonia, I have a small sphere, ("Piccola Scultura") - 6" Round that I have had since the 1960's...! And, I also have a small standing Silver piece just 5" 1/2 by 2" 3/4...Both I acquired back in the mid to late 60's....They sit in my living room...

I will have to take pictures of them and email them to you....!
I have loved seeing the many pictures you posted and also, going to the sites you linked....It is a TRUE Feast to see so very many things of his in their natural habitat--Italy, I assume....
Every time you post the these wonderful Artists work, I adore all of them.

I got interupted about an or more ago, so finally I am postimg my comment!

  17. Blogger keeps eating my comments!
Not just here - at other blogs too!
I left a comment here the other day and poof! - vanished into thin air!

I love the "crown of thorns" - I think it is brilliant!

You would like this 1000kg ball supported only by water pressure. You can spin it with two fingers -isn't that amazing?

  28. São belas, sem serem bonitinhas. Poderosas, crueis, lembram sucata galática e lixo cósmico.
    Não conhecia. Gostei !

  29. I'm sure I've seen these sculptures before. Is there a photo of the ones at the University of California? That's my alma mater and I visited there last year, maybe I saw it then.
