THE SHELTERING SKY... O CÉU QUE NOS PROTEGE...

The Sheltering Sky, directed by Bernando Bertolucci, is a great movie, one of my favorite movies, starring Debra Winger (she looks extremely gorgeous in this film), John Malkovich and Campbell Scott. I love the music, the actor's performance, the costume design, the scenery, the photography. I watched this film many times...The music composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto is amazingly beautiful! If you have not seen this movie before, I strongly recommend it.

The opening title sequence and the first scene when they arrive at the dock are really wonderful!

"The Sheltering Sky" soundtrack is beautiful!

Ryuichi Sakamoto is just great!

The Sheltering Sky is a 1990 British-Italian drama film based on the 1949 novel by the writer Paul Bowles (who narrates the film and appears in a cameo role) about a couple who journey to northern Africa in the hopes of rekindling their marriage but soon fall prey to the dangers that surround them. Three Americans from New York arrive in Tangier in 1947. Port Moresby (John Malkovich) and his wife Kit (Debra Winger) are accompanied by their friend George Tunner (Campbell Scott) on a trip that will take them deep into the Sahara Desert. Tunner observes, "We're probably the first tourists they've had since the war" to which Kit replies, "We're not tourists. We're travelers." While Tunner plans to return home in a few weeks, Port and Kit plan on staying for a year or two.

Quote about the difference between tourists and travelers and another quotes:
Port Moresby: Well, terra firma.
Tunner: We're probably the first tourists they've had since the war.
Kit Moresby: Tunner, we're not tourists. We're travelers.
Tunner: Oh. What's the difference?
Port Moresby: A tourist is someone who thinks about going home the moment they arrive, Tunner.
Kit Moresby: Whereas a traveler might not come back at all.
Tunner: You mean *I'm* a tourist.
Kit Moresby: Yes, Tunner. And I'm half and half.

I saw the movie when it first came out. Loved it. But thanks for reminding me, it's definitely worth a second viewing. I'm a Bertolucci fan -- Last Tango, The Conformist, 1900...

Campbell Scott is the son of George C. Want to hear my George C. story? My friend and I were riding horses up in Griffith Park, sometime in the 80's or 90's, I think. And this really pleasant fellow crossed our path, also on a horse. We exchanged some thoughts about the beauty of the day and the scenery. This guy was sitting comfortably back in his western saddle, and stretched his arms behind him, and rested his hands on his horse's rump. Eventually we parted company. "Do you know who that was?" said my friend. Why no, I didn't. "That was George C. Scott."

Ryuichi Sakamoto wrote one of my favourite pieces of music for the movie Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence - I was only a teenager when I saw the movie in the 80's yet all these years later I still love that music.

I haven't seen The Sheltering Sky - I don't know why! It sounds like a beautiful film. I'm going to watch it this week.

Just great story, Karin! George C. Scott was really famous. I remember I saw him in the movie Patton. As I like Campbell Scott, one day I was looking for information about him and then I discovered that George C. Scott was his father. I have not seen recently films interpreted by Campbell Scott.

I saw Sheltering Sky when it first came out as well. I'd pretty much forgotten it. How wonderful to get a taste of it again! The music is beautiful, and I love the images of the desert.

Karin, that's a great George C. Scott story. I once brushed elbows with Campbell Scott in a tiny Seattle food co-op. I knew *exactly* who he was. He's even more handsome in person.

I loved that movie and have watched it several times too. Especially love the Blue Men of Timbuktu.

Lucky Karin - luckier if it had been Coleen Dewhurst; George's x-wife. I had a crush on her.

Somehow I missed this movie. It looks very interesting, and the music is beautiful. John Malkovich is one of my favorite actors - his movies are usually so thoughtful and intelligent.

Sonia, thank you so much for the link to your mother's weavings. She was a real artist.

What a super recommendation!
I know the book well and I have been to the Sahara.
When I worked at the American school in Marrakesh I met several people who had known Paul Bowles well.
He was very involved in the American School in Tangiers.
Now I must see the film!

Oi da Wellington! I have free wifi today! So happy. Thank you for keeping me company on the road. The Internet connection here is muito mal! If we move here, I will have to stop blogging ;)

I've watched the sheltering sky but somehow, I don't remember much about it. I love the dialogue you included. The difference between a tourist and a traveller. I hope I'm the latter but often I'm not.

Beijos, muitos beijos! X
