A Trade Card or Advertising Postcard is a postcard used for advertising purposes, as opposed to tourism and greeting postcards. Trade cards first became popular at the beginning of the 17th century in London. As the designs became more attractive and colorful, collecting trade cards became a popular hobby in the late 19th century, since color images were not yet widely available. (You can see more about Advertising Trade Cards, here and Early Advertising Collection, here )
ReplyDeleteOh, I LOVE these Cards, Sonia....It is funny how the Children so often have kind of mature old faces...particularly in the Fine Shoes Ad....Lord, those children look very old...LOL!
ReplyDeleteBut I love all of these and the whole idea of them. I can see why someone would want to "collect" them.....Great Post, my dear!
Cara Sonia,
ReplyDeletelindíssimos estes cartões.

I really enjoyed looking at these old fashioned swap cards. It's interesting to see how our advertising images have changed.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend,
Anne xx
What fun scans! I love that last one - if they can guarantee perfect baking, even at my house's altitude of more than 2km above sea level, they've got my business!
ReplyDeleteSonia,
Beijo.
Those trade cards are delightful! And I remember having to take Scotts Emulsion in the winter.... just like that tough looking Sailor Boy! I hated it!
ReplyDeleteHi Sonia! The ancient times nicely gleam through these very fascinating cards, a really beautiful post!
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday :-)
I think my favourite one is the card in your blog banner.
ReplyDeleteI love the little girl in the middle with the curls.
And I laughed when I read the Vegetable Sicilian Hair Renewer.

How fun! Back from the days of innocence. :) I absolutely love the colors they used in this era... they're so lively, yet so soft.

These cards are beautiful and unique. Thank you for sharing them.
ReplyDeleteJULY 1: Happy CANADA Day, Sonia! You may not be aware that it's Canada's 144th birthday today, and Will and Kate are in Ottawa to help us celebrate. Actually, we don't need help, but it's great to have them here!
ReplyDeleteChildren in those cards are so lovely like angels and all cards are very decorative. The style has been same also in my country.
ReplyDeleteHappy rewarding weekend to you Sonia!
OI Sonia
