Artist, writer and professional organizer Felice Cohen lives in the tiny dwelling overlooking Central Park. By choosing a studio that measures just 12 feet by 7 feet, Felice Cohen can afford to live in Manhattan’s Upper West Side where apartments rent for an average of $3,600 per month. She pays just over $700 for her 90-square-foot microstudio. She said she wanted to live in Manhattan, but didn’t want to spend a lot of money to do it. “I think a lot of people have a lot of space that they’re not using." On her first night in the apartment, Felice said she suffered a panic attack because of the limited space between her elevated bed and the ceiling. “Sure I don’t have a large refrigerator or an extra room, but when it comes down to it, I live in New York city, steps from Central Park (my backyard), Lincoln Center, numerous restaurants, theatre and wonderful museums.” Felice said “it’s worth it.” “I look out my window and it’s New York City, I mean, that’s my backyard.” Felice said she initially planned to live in the apartment for one year, but loved the “quiet, cozy little space” so much, she’s been there for three years.
How small a space could you live in?

I once, during a desperate time, lived in 200 sq foot cottage. The roof pitched on one side, so part of the square footage had a 4 foot ceiling. My friends called it the Doll's House.
ReplyDeleteI spent a lot of time outside.
Oh, how fun!Well, my first thought is our RV which is about 32' with three slide-outs...but it's bigger than her apartment! I can identify with the idea of having to keep everything organized and after awhile it's nice and cozy. Bigger isn't nec. better for sure! I think (and I'm speaking specifically of Americans) we've reached this more-more-more way and we have just too much 'junk' or things! Most homes have two car garages where I live...yet ends up being more room for stuff and leave the multi thousand dollar vehicles outside because they can't fit. There is definately something to be said for 'down sizing' great thought provoking post this morning!
ReplyDeleteTaí uma boa pergunta! É preciso ir diminuindo para se saber! Eu ainda tenho muito espaço para perder...
ReplyDeleteBjs e parabéns pelo post1
I could certainly have lived in this small space when I was younger and very single... at age 57, my knees would no longer let me climb that ladder up to bed. I think she has a sweet little home!
:) Gostei! Boa semana! Bjs Nadia
ReplyDeleteI think as Americans we acquire way too much junk (says the guy who lives in a 4,300-square-foot home); in fact we're starting a major clean-out so that we can eventually downsize. But I couldn't fit in that apartment!
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing to me that she can live in such a small space. I think it is wonderful that she has made such a cozy home for herself.
ReplyDeleteI personally wouldn't last one hour in there....I would definitely have panic attacks.
Hope you are doing well.
Hugs,
Hi Sonia! Interesting post. A microstudio for living in Manhattan: this is so good!
ReplyDeleteHappy Tuesday!
ReplyDeletebjsss
I could do this for a time. I am a gardener and love my children and grandchildren...so now I need more space. But this is a great apartment for a young girl.
ReplyDeleteprobably not THAT small! my house is quite tiny too and i love it though my husband does get claustrophobic. we used to live in a big house with a big yard but moved here about 9 years ago. we had to sell about a third of our furniture to fit into this little house! i would like to downsize even more as we get older. reduce the cleaning, you know :p
ReplyDeleteMaybe just a little bit too small! Where should I put the piano? :-)
ReplyDeleteBut, I personally prefer smaller in a nice neighbourhood than a big one where I would not be so happy to live!
That space is too small for me. It would make me claustraphobic!!! And the so called "view" from her window---Well, I wouldn't be able to stand that either. Of course---If I had to, I could live practically anywhere, but it certainly wouldn't be my choice....
ReplyDeleteThis was GREAT Sonia! To see the pictures and then the Video....you really get a sense of the place. I cannot imagine having 9 or 10 people there, though....We would all be like Sardines...lol!
Such an interesting post, my dear....Thanks so much for this and thanks, too, for your lovely comments on my blog!
I think that's a little too small for me! :D
ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing?
ReplyDeleteIf I was the sort of person who loved to go out to restaurants and theatres all the time - it would be great.
But I am a home-body - I need more space.
Oi Sonia
ReplyDeleteGostei do espaço dela , moraria tranquila aí .
boa semana
Sonia - my seeds arrived on Friday!
ReplyDeleteThey are so tiny - it's hard to believe such a magnificent creation comes from this tiny little thing.
Sonia, eu nao poderia dormir numa cama dessas, rs.
I LOVE this post, esp. the video. What a delightful and charming young woman!!
