I just got photos of Leafcutter ants working at today morning! I found a cranny in the corner of my porch, surrounded by many leaves. You can see the "door" of their nest inside the ground and the Leafcutter ants carrying green leaves to indoors!

You can see the damage on the bare branch's shrubs!

Incredible, your photos - in addition to your previous story!
ReplyDeleteI am so not into bugs....Do they kill the bush then?
ReplyDeleteFantastic shots Sonia!
ReplyDeleteI am the opposite of "neva" - I LOVE bugs.
Even spiders! (my husband hates them).
I like the sixth shot where you can see what they have done with all the leaves.
Have you ever been bitten by one?
WOW! Those ants are something else!!! They are "busy"....! I see why you said in your earlier post that they can go through some of these plsnts so quickly....! They certainly can do a great deal of damage, can't they?
ReplyDeleteLike them or not these colonies can increase to a SIGNIFICANT size and I would be worried about my foundation if I saw their entrance door around my property. Have that checked out.
ReplyDeleteSonia, I always enjoy the photography posted on your site. The pictures and narrative about the leafcutter ants is especially good. I'm going to have my grandsons read about them. The pictures really tell the story.

ReplyDeleteslightly creepy, but also fascinating! as a child I really liked watchng the small ants work.
ReplyDeleteExtraordinary photos and description. I'm so sorry about your garden but thank you for sharing this with us!
ReplyDeleteThey don't look like good little visitors to have around, although they're very interesting! We watched a show about them on Animal Planet just recently and were amazed at the size of their underground nest. It was huge!
ReplyDeleteIs there a way to get rid of them?...assuming you want to. Aren't they a threat to your house's foundation?
love these :) thanks for sharing !
ReplyDeleteI love your focus on animals, especially these ants. How interesting.
