SERRA DA CANASTRA
Canastra Mountain Ridge National Park

This post shows many beautiful photos taken by a friend of mine from Avaré, Nilson Nishida Junior, in Serra da Canastra, in last May. Junior went with a group of friends of Avaré Trail Clube to a challenging and amazing trail in Serra da Canastra, by motorcycle. Here you can enjoy wonderful scenery and know a little more about the beauty of Brazil. Many thanks Junior for the beautiful photos!

"Seen from afar, this huge massif of the Serra da Canastra (Sierra of the Basket) resembles a coffer or a basket, therefore its curious name. It is located in the south-western region of the state of Minas Gerais and encompasses the municipalities of Sao Roque de Minas, Sacramento and Delfinópolis. The park holds two important massifs which unfold over an area of 71525 hectares: the Sierra of the Seven Turns and the Serra da Canastra, with altitudes varying between 900 and 1496 metres high. The objective of the creation of the Serra da Canastra National Park, the 3rd of April of 1972, was to preserve the source of the Säo Francisco River, also known as the Old Boy.Numerous water courses are born in this area, tributaries of the Sao Francisco, which form natural pools attracting many tourists in the higher part of the park.It is possible to find endangered species, such as the Maned wolf and the Giant anteater, along the roads with relative ease. The park's fauna constitutes a major tourist attraction for visitors have the chance of watching it in its natural habitat in the upper zones; be it at first light in the morning or at dusk."

The vegetation in the area is typical of the Cerrado , with some Atlantic influence.

Numerous water courses are born in this area, tributaries of the São Francisco River, which form natural pools attracting many tourists in the higher part of the park.

The group is ready to hit the trail. What a gorgeous view!

  2. Sonia,

  4. Sonia, Serra da Canastra is close to Mococa, but I have never been there. My husband is a dirt biker, and looking at these beautiful pictures took me back in time when he used to ride a lot!

  6. Oh wow, the photos are amazing! Convey my regards to your friend, Junior.

I am so pleased to see these photos because they are so different from what I expected. When I think of Brazil, I think of the Amazon forest and the tropical jungles. I know Brazil is a huge country with different terrains and climates but we rarely see the other landscapes.

So it is really nice to learn and see a different type of Brazil than what is shown in movies.

  9. I was really enjoying those photos until I got to the ones with those trail bikes. Sorry, I'm just not a fan of noisy, smelly vehicles in beautiful nature. A thought, please, for people who might be hiking in that country, looking for nature's peace and quiet...Some animals too might be a little upset.
