TAPESTRIES AND CROCHET

These table runners and tapestries were woven in wool by my mother. My mother Antonietta was a very creative, talented and an enthusiast wool weaver and teacher. She made many beautiful tapestries, rugs, blankets, ponchos, scarves, placemat set, cushion covers, table runners, bags, purses and so on.

Weaving is an ancient textile art and craft that involves placing two sets of threads or yarn made of fiber called the warp and weft of the loom and turning them into cloth. This cloth can be plain (in one color or a simple pattern), or it can be woven in decorative or artistic designs, including tapestries.

Crochet tablecloth made by my grandmother.

My grandmother Rita was a very talented artisan and her crochets were very beautiful.

On the wall is a piece of tapestry from Peru.

The Republic of Peru is a country in western South America, bordering Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east, Bolivia to the east, south-east and south, Chile to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Known as the cradle of the Inca empire, Peru is rich in people, culture and history.

  3. Wow! How wonderful, Sonia...And such BEAUTIFUL things they are. Weaving is such an amazing 'art'. And that your mother was such a prolific weaver, is quite something. I know these pieces must be so very precious to you....
My Grandmother too, crocheted...that is such a gorgeous tablecloth...Isn't it wonderful to have something that your very own Grandmother sewed with her own hands. Thank You for sharing these very beautiful things, dear Sonia.

  4. I love the first tapestry/weaving, it looks to me as seeds bursting open and sending their stor to the Earth. I also love the fact that the trees are helped to stad tall by a piece of real tree.
Your Grandmothers tablecloth reminds me of work my mother used to do as she was a knitter and crocheter. I still have jumpers she designed and made for me thirty years ago and I love having her work in my home as I suspect you do of your mum and grandmum.

  5. Wonderful work, Sonia. I took a class in weaving about 30 years ago and I had a small tabletop loom for many years. I only have one piece left, a wall hanging. I never thought to put it in the blog - but now I might.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful work with us.

  6. Sonia - I've been looking forward to your sharing these. The crochet work is incredible! Your grandmother had great talent and much patience. I love your mother's work; she used a lovely warm palette of colours. I admire the artistry in the pieces with wrapping and knotting - a lovely sunset behind the woods. I'm interested in the first one, with its very beautiful design. Would you be willing to post some close-ups showing the technique she used in the different areas? I'm assuming the colours are weft threads and that she left long strands on one side for fringe? The weaving at the left in the third photo is a technique I used to do quite a bit of. If I can find some photos, I'll try to post them on my Handweaving blog. Thanks so much for showing us these in the setting of your lovely home.

  7. P.S. The Debussy Arabesque was a very gracious and elegant accompaniment to this post. I love Debussy's piano music and this is a lovely performance.

  13. You come from a family of excellent artists. My mother, too, was a weaver ... and I loved the look and feel of her work! But, your mother did outstanding work - amazingly abstract in gorgeous color ... and the pieces perfectly suit your home.

  14. I will echo Helen: the wall hanging of the trees is so wonderful.

Crochet certainly seems to be making a comeback. I taught my self to crochet about 35 years ago, and have old pattern books from my mother. It went out of fashion but now you can see women wearing crocheted items again. And that tablecloth - superb!

Thay all look wonderful against the brick walls, too. It must be a pleasure to live in such a beautiful space!

  21. Hi Sonia..Thanks for coming by my blog today...GEORGE is the Pachycereus Pringlei...and he's about 7 feet tall! I do love watching these flowers grow...like any flowers I guess except so very many of these Cactus type flowers only last for one day or one night, a year! They seem more precious to me in a way, you know?

LOVE seeing your Tapestry's again, and your Beautiful tablecloth, too...It makes me think of my Grandmother.
