These table runners and tapestries were woven in wool by my mother. My mother Antonietta was a very creative, talented and an enthusiast wool weaver and teacher. She made many beautiful tapestries, rugs, blankets, ponchos, scarves, placemat set, cushion covers, table runners, bags, purses and so on.

Weaving is an ancient textile art and craft that involves placing two sets of threads or yarn made of fiber called the warp and weft of the loom and turning them into cloth. This cloth can be plain (in one color or a simple pattern), or it can be woven in decorative or artistic designs, including tapestries.

Crochet tablecloth made by my grandmother.

My grandmother Rita was a very talented artisan and her crochets were very beautiful.

On the wall is a piece of tapestry from Peru.

The Republic of Peru is a country in western South America, bordering Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east, Bolivia to the east, south-east and south, Chile to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Known as the cradle of the Inca empire, Peru is rich in people, culture and history.

Photos by myself

  1. How lucky to have grown up around such fine artisans. Your mother and grandmother produced such beautiful weavings and cloths. To have your home filled with these treasures is truly lovely.

  2. Beautiful Sonia. You are blessed to have such treasures from your mother and grandmother. Do you als make yourself?

  3. Ahhhh.... how wonderful to see how you have decorated and appreciate the artwork your mother and grandmother created. Very very nice.

  4. Wow! How wonderful, Sonia...And such BEAUTIFUL things they are. Weaving is such an amazing 'art'. And that your mother was such a prolific weaver, is quite something. I know these pieces must be so very precious to you....
My Grandmother too, crocheted...that is such a gorgeous tablecloth...Isn't it wonderful to have something that your very own Grandmother sewed with her own hands. Thank You for sharing these very beautiful things, dear Sonia.

  5. I love the first tapestry/weaving, it looks to me as seeds bursting open and sending their stor to the Earth. I also love the fact that the trees are helped to stad tall by a piece of real tree.
Your Grandmothers tablecloth reminds me of work my mother used to do as she was a knitter and crocheter. I still have jumpers she designed and made for me thirty years ago and I love having her work in my home as I suspect you do of your mum and grandmum.

  6. Wonderful work, Sonia. I took a class in weaving about 30 years ago and I had a small tabletop loom for many years. I only have one piece left, a wall hanging. I never thought to put it in the blog - but now I might.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful work with us.

  7. Sonia - I've been looking forward to your sharing these. The crochet work is incredible! Your grandmother had great talent and much patience. I love your mother's work; she used a lovely warm palette of colours. I admire the artistry in the pieces with wrapping and knotting - a lovely sunset behind the woods. I'm interested in the first one, with its very beautiful design. Would you be willing to post some close-ups showing the technique she used in the different areas? I'm assuming the colours are weft threads and that she left long strands on one side for fringe? The weaving at the left in the third photo is a technique I used to do quite a bit of. If I can find some photos, I'll try to post them on my Handweaving blog. Thanks so much for showing us these in the setting of your lovely home.

  8. P.S. The Debussy Arabesque was a very gracious and elegant accompaniment to this post. I love Debussy's piano music and this is a lovely performance.

  9. These tapestries are incredible. I can't imagine the amount of work it must take to produce something like this. Very beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Tina

  10. Your mother's work is amazing. She was a talented well as your grandmother.

You must be so proud. And it is wonderful the way you have held on to it and displayed it. What a beautiful home you must have!

  11. These are so beautiful and colorful Sonia! It's wonderful that you display them.Your Mother and grandmother were talented ladies.

I love the wood ceiling in this house too. Very nice! Thanks for sharing these beautiful things with us.

  12. Beautiful!!! Want gorgeous work!! Love the music too ;) I was finishing up my work and straightening my desk and it was SO relaxing and refreshing- Thank you!

  13. Oh, Sonia ... they are all so beautiful. How lucky you are to have had such talented people share their beautiful work with you. I love how you are displaying them in your home. Thank you for sharing them with us.
    Take care, Meow

  14. You come from a family of excellent artists. My mother, too, was a weaver ... and I loved the look and feel of her work! But, your mother did outstanding work - amazingly abstract in gorgeous color ... and the pieces perfectly suit your home.

  15. beautiful - I love the one of the trees. Helen

  16. I will echo Helen: the wall hanging of the trees is so wonderful.

Crochet certainly seems to be making a comeback. I taught my self to crochet about 35 years ago, and have old pattern books from my mother. It went out of fashion but now you can see women wearing crocheted items again. And that tablecloth - superb!

  17. Sonia,
You have your own little art museum going on in your home. Such wonderful treasures you have and especially the ones made by your mother and grandmother. Everything is just beautiful.

    Thanks for sharing,

  18. What lovely textiles you have, Sonia. I enjoyed seeing your mother's tapestries earlier, but to see so many lovely pieces displayed in your home is breathtaking!

Thay all look wonderful against the brick walls, too. It must be a pleasure to live in such a beautiful space!

  19. Your house is BEAUTIFUL!!!! I love it. How special to have such talented family, the woven tapestrys and that table cloth are amazing. I LOVE that butterfly tapestry. I love that your home has so much love and warmth in it.

  20. What a great way to honor family and ancestors. Incredible work.

  21. What talent runs through your family. The weavings & crochet are beautiful. Wish I could see up close the pattern the tablecloth is. Lovely work! How fortunate you can look at these pieces every day. Do you weave and/or crochet?

  22. Sonia,

I can't hope noticing how warm your house looks -- all those windows and earthy colours and light --

I really enjoy seeing your home. When do we get to see a picture of you, my dear?

  23. Hi Sonia,

I've just found your blog through several others that I know. You are clearly descended from great craftswomen. The crochet, the tapestries, all are so beautiful! It must give you great comfort to have such things and to know who created them.

  24. Hi Sonia..Thanks for coming by my blog today...GEORGE is the Pachycereus Pringlei...and he's about 7 feet tall! I do love watching these flowers any flowers I guess except so very many of these Cactus type flowers only last for one day or one night, a year! They seem more precious to me in a way, you know?

LOVE seeing your Tapestry's again, and your Beautiful tablecloth, too...It makes me think of my Grandmother.

  25. Wow, what beautiful tapestry! My grandmother has taken up weaving in her retirement, so she is a beginner but I treasure the placemats she made as a wedding present for us

  26. How beautiful these tapestries and crocheted items are, Sonia. And tbe personal link must make them all the more special for you. Thank you for sharing them. I love this kind of handiwork and I suspect I'll be back for another look!

  27. Your home is so lovely Sonia. Beautiful colors and interior decoration! These works are certainly magnificent. You do have your own art gallery! Your mother and grandmother did superb work. Lucky you to have such wonderful things to decorate your home with and to know they were created by your loved ones. That makes them extra special. I'm so glad you shared them with us.

  28. Hi Sonia,
    Your tapestries are beautiful.
I noticed your comment about my collage I use picasa to make them it is a free download and is very useful for sorting and editing photos

  29. I loved seeing how you have used those pieces of your heritage so beautifully in your home. I have weavings in mine also but purchased through the years. My mother crocheted, however, and I have those kind of tablecloths also-- doilies too but I don't have a way to use those.

  30. The tapestries are gorgeous. I am in awe at how you've managed to create an indoor space that is seamless with the beautiful countryside you live in.
    The butterfly is my favorite
