GRANDPARENTS... AVÓS...

Today's Photo Friday challenge is Remarkable.

My grandfather and my grandmother were remarkable human being. His name was Felício Marmo and he was born at August 1th, 1884, in Viamão, Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) but he was raised and lived all his life in São Paulo . My grandmother’s name was Rita Goulart and she was born at May 15, 1888 in Itu, São Paulo's State. They both were talented teachers, loved each other so much, had four childens and also they were dedicated parents and grandparents.

Books was his passion and he transmitted to me his enthusiasm for literature and arts in general. This photo was taken at a hotel room in 1909. He wrote two books about his memories. (Click on all photos to enlarge)

My grandparents married at October 1th, 1913.

My grandmother was a kind, sweet person and very special to me. She was also a talented and creative artisan.

My grandmother at her graduation.

My grandfather with his students in a Public School.

My great-grandfather (siting at the middle), named Francesco Antonio Marmo, was born in Casalbuono, Salerno Province, in Italy, come to Brazil in 1855 and had eleven childrens, eight sons and three daughters. In this photo, we see only six of them and my grandfather is the first standing at the right. Long flowing mustaches were common and fashion in 1900's.

My grandmother died at the age of 88 and him at the age of 96. They were truly a remarkable human being to me and to my family.

  3. I too like to look at family photos.
great to see your grandmother graduation. In the early 1900's it was quite rare for Women to graduate. here in England some universities would not award degrees to women.

  8. Sonia, you are so lucky to have these photos (and high quality ones at that) of your family going so far back. My favorite is the one of your grandfather sitting on the bed. The other things in the room tell so much about that time too. And the moustache is rather dashing!

I love them all. That one of your father sitting in the hotel room is so neat with all those items from that period there.

Those moustaches!! They must have taken some maintenance, but look very nice.

Thanks for sharing these pictures of your lovely family. What memories they must bring back to you.

  27. Mona, I'm very touched and pleased to see these photos and to learn something about your family!!!

Especially the photo of your grandfather sitting on the bed is remarkable. Most photos from these days are the "official" ones for specific events, but this is just a natural scene, which at the same time says so much about him and life at that time!!
