Coimbra is a city in the municipality of Coimbra in Portugal. The historic city of Coimbra is located in central Portugal, 120 km south of Porto, 195 km north of Lisbon. According 2001 Census, the city proper had a population of 101,069. The city of Coimbra is one of the most important urban centres in Portugal (after the much larger cities of Lisbon and Porto), playing a central role in the northern-central littoral and interior of the country. It is the principal centre in the Centro region, the District of Coimbra and the Baixo Mondego subregion. With a dense urban grid the city of Coimbra is famous for its monuments, churches, libraries, museums, parks, nightlife, healthcare and shopping facilities, but above all for its intense cultural life, centered on the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in Europe.  

Coimbra é uma cidade portuguesa, capital do Distrito de Coimbra, a maior cidade da região Centro de Portugal e situada na sub-região do Baixo Mondego, com cerca de 101 069 habitantes. Sendo o maior núcleo urbano, é centro de referência na região das Beiras, Centro de Portugal com mais de dois milhões de habitantes. Cidade historicamente universitária, por causa da Universidade de Coimbra, fundada em 1290, conta actualmente com cerca de 30 mil estudantes. Banhada pelo Rio Mondego, Coimbra é sede de um município com 319,41 km² de área e cerca de 143 052 habitantes (2011), subdividido em 31 freguesias. É considerada uma das mais importantes cidades portuguesas.

It has its source in Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal. O Rio Mondego é o quinto maior rio português e o primeiro de todos os que têm o seu curso inteiramente em Portugal. Nasce na Serra da Estrela e tem a sua foz no Oceano Atlântico, junto à cidade da Figueira da Foz. É o rio que banha a cidade de Coimbra.


The classic Hotel Astoria, in Coimbra, is situated at the Largo da Portagem, (Toll square), that is the main entrance to the city and faces the Santa Clara Bridge. The Hotel Astoria, one of the beautiful architectural symbol of the city of Coimbra, was built in 1926. O Hotel Astoria em Coimbra esta localizado no Largo da Portagem, a principal entrada da cidade de Coimbra e ao lado da Ponte de Santa Clara. O Hotel Astoria, um dos mais belos símbolos arquitetônicos de Coimbra, foi construído em 1926.

  3. Hi Sonia....Is Sofia in Portugal on Holiday or for work? These pictures are all so very interesting....I love the close look at the buildings---the architecture---Pretty Amazing!
    And that is a WONDERFUL picture of Sofia! She looks so very Happy...!
    And the whole look of that city.....Once again, I get to visit a place I've never been to or seen, (nor will I be able to) through the eyes of someone who is there and enjoying everything about it. Thank you and thank Sofia for me, too!

  5. I'm listening to the music while I type! These little old Portuguese towns are so lovely. There's so much more history on the Continent than here.

    BTW, I read the Portuguese first, as always. Found some words that completely eluded me and couldn't find the match in the English section. kkkkk!!! Back to the dictionary :)
