Edward Hopper is one of my favourite painters. He was born on July 22, 1882, in Nyack, New York and he died May 15, 1967, in New York City. "Born and raised in Nyack, New York, Edward Hopper became one of the most famous painters of 20th century American, known for interior scenes of isolated figures, rural landscapes, and marine scenes."

"He was raised in a home with a view of the Hudson River and showed early art talent. Following two years of illustration, in 1901, he became a student at the New York School of Art under William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, the latter being credited as his most influential teacher."

"In 1907, he went to Paris and was exposed to Impressionism, which affected his interest in light and pattern, but he retained a unique solidity in his work. Between 1915 and 1928, he completed nearly seventy etchings and drypoints, much influenced by Rembrandt and Meryon with the use of light contrasts."

"In 1929, he spent three weeks in Charleston, South Carolina, and produced eleven watercolors, mostly outdoor landscapes but one a church interior. During much of his career, he lived half of the year in Greenwich Village, New York in a row house facing Washington Square and the other half of the year near Truro, Massachusetts on water with a view towards Provincetown."

  5. Hopper's one of my favourites, too! I love the way he works with form and light. You've picked some very nice examples. You might enjoy a book by Gail Levin: Hopper's Places. It has reproductions of his paintings side by side with photos of each location. It's accompanied by some interesting writing.

  10. Thank you, Sonia, for introducing me to this artist, who I'd only known by name. Uncluttered use of color and lines, and still evocative. My favorite is the Nighthawk, and the music you sent with your email, playing in the background now, is the perfect accompaniment.

I was taken with Rooms by the Sea, but not sure what to make of that abrupt view to the water - a bit spooky.

  22. Edward Hopper. Wonderful. There was an exhibition of his work here in London, last year or the year before, Sonia, which I saw. I've always liked his work so much. He took the feelings of loneliness alienation and turned them into art, making something positive out of them. My favourite? It has to be Nighthawks ....
