MANDARIN ORANGE... MEXERICA...

Our mandarin orange tree has produced its crop this month. The Mandarin orange, also known as the mandarin, is a small citrus tree (Citrus reticulata) with fruit resembling other oranges. The mandarin orange is a variety of the orange family and is considered a native of south-eastern Asia and the Philippines. In the Philippines all mandarin oranges are called naranjita, Spanish-speaking people in the American tropics call them mandarina and in Brazil, according the region it has a different name. In my region, São Paulo, we call them as "Mexerica". Mandarin oranges are usually eaten plain or in fruit salads. Specifically reddish-orange mandarin cultivars can be marketed as tangerines. The four top producers in 2011 were China, Spain, Brazil and Japan.

Nossa mexeriqueira produziu suas frutas neste mês de julho. A mexerica (Citrus reticulata), também conhecida como tangerina, laranja-mimosa, mandarina ou bergamota, é uma fruta cítrica de cor alaranjada e sabor adocicado, originária do sudeste da Ásia e das Filipinas. "Mexerica" é um termo mais comum nas regiões Centro-Oeste e Sudeste do Brasil, onde faz-se distinção da mexerica, Citrus reticulata, em relação à tangerina, Citrus tangerine, como ocorre na língua inglesa, onde a mexerica é uma mandarin orange e a tangerina é uma tangerine. Os quatro maiores produtores em 2011 foram a China, Espanha, Brasil e Japão.
