MANDARIN ORANGE... MEXERICA...

Our mandarin orange tree has produced its crop this month. The Mandarin orange, also known as the mandarin, is a small citrus tree (Citrus reticulata) with fruit resembling other oranges. The mandarin orange is a variety of the orange family and is considered a native of south-eastern Asia and the Philippines. In the Philippines all mandarin oranges are called naranjita, Spanish-speaking people in the American tropics call them mandarina and in Brazil, according the region it has a different name. In my region, São Paulo, we call them as "Mexerica". Mandarin oranges are usually eaten plain or in fruit salads. Specifically reddish-orange mandarin cultivars can be marketed as tangerines. The four top producers in 2011 were China, Spain, Brazil and Japan.
Aren't they the most beautiful colour?

i'm from the philippines and we call them "dalanghita", most likely coming from naranjita.

  2. Morning Sonia! Here, we just call them a mandarin. My tree has been loaded too, is just finishing now. They were HUGE, and this coming year I will give the tree some TLC so that next year they are a little juicier and a lot sweeter!

  6. We call them mandarin oranges in the U.S. They won't grow where I live, but we can get them at supermarkets. Not nearly as good as picking them fresh off your own trees!

I like your series of photos, how they build from distant to close-up.

  11. As a child it was always the greatest treat to get a mandarin orange. You brought back memories for me. Here they would never grow, though I have kept a lemon alive in the house. I get to enjoy the lake in many of my photos so that will have to satisfy my "taste" today. Thanks for the posting. Jack

  16. that last photo has me wanting to put on 3-D glasses.

I once went to a dinner party where the host served us slices of baloney, ritz crackers and mandarin oranges in green jello. Gads he was a fool.
