Theo Jansen (He was born in 17 March 1948 in Scheveningen, in the Netherlands ) is an artist and kinetic sculptor living and working in the Netherlands. He builds large works - "Strandbeest" - which resemble skeletons of animals which are able to walk using the wind on the beaches of the Netherlands. His animated works are a fusion of art and engineering. In a BMW television commercial, Jansen says "The walls between art and engineering exist only in our minds."

Great choice, Sonia. Jansen is a most gifted artist with a brilliant mind.

By the way, you might want to revise the link to the videos. When I clicked it all I saw was a dialog box suggesting that my computer had a virus (malicious spam that tries to hijack your browser and some of your visitors may fall for it).

Just when I think nothing on this earth can surprise me - something does!
Those creatures are beautiful as free-standing sculptures, but to see them moving is utterly fascinating!

  11. Sensational! Some kind of "da Vinci" touch to these "machines"! (I just wonder how he can make his living on this? Must be difficult to sell these pieces of art, they will stay where you put them!)

  38. I had never heard of Theo Jansen so watched the video you linked to. There are a lot of other YouTube videos on that page as well, including links to TED talk he gave, explaining how he constructs them. Very wonderful! He hopes that these animals can live on their own in the future; right now he has to help them a lot!
