"Lydia Davis (born July 15, 1947) is a contemporary American writer noted for her short stories. Davis is also a novelist, essayist, and translator from French and other languages, and has produced several new translations of French literary classics, including Proust's Swann’s Way and Flaubert's Madame Bovary. Davis was born in Northampton, Massachusetts. In 1974 Davis married Paul Auster, with whom she had a son named Daniel. Davis is now married to artist Alan Cote, with whom she has a son, Theo Cote. She has published six collections of short stories, including The Thirteenth Woman and Other Stories (1976) and Break It Down (1986), a Finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award. Her most recent collection was "Varieties of Disturbance", published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 2007 and a Finalist for the National Book Award. FLOWERING... FLORESCENDO...

Walking around my garden this morning I photographed the first pink flowers blooming on the Ipê-Rosa  (Pink Tabebuia) tree, in this season. Before blooming, the leaves fall down on the grass and in few days this tree will be full of pink flowers.  I love the sound of dry leaves crunching under my footsteps and skittering along the ground with the wind...
Dando uma volta hoje pela manhã no meu jardim, fotografei as primeiras flores do Ipê-Rosa desta temporada. Antes da florada, a árvore perde todas as suas folhas que caem no gramado. Em alguns dias, a árvore estará toda florida. Gosto do barulhinho que as folhas secas fazem quando ando sobre elas e também quando elas se agitam com o vento...

A solitary tiny flower... If you look with attention at the right of the flower you can see a nest of the Rufous Hornero (Furnarius Rufus), that is one of the Ovenbirds. This bird is very common in Brazil, and in the South America. Here in Brazil his common name is João-de-barro. ("barro" means "clay" in Portuguese). They are often seen on the ground collecting mud or dung to build their remarkable nests. These nests looks like miniature versions of the type of oven that you can see outside many houses in rural South America. Hence the name "Ovenbirds" in English.

THE SHELTERING SKY... O CÉU QUE NOS PROTEGE...

The Sheltering Sky, directed by Bernando Bertolucci, is a great movie, one of my favorite movies, starring Debra Winger (she looks extremely gorgeous in this film), John Malkovich and Campbell Scott. I love the music, the actor's performance, the costume design, the scenery, the photography. I watched this film many times...The music composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto is amazingly beautiful! If you have not seen this movie before, I strongly recommend it. 
O Céu que nos Protege é um excelente filme, um dos meus favoritos, dirigido por Bernardo Bertolucci e interpretado por Debra Winger (ela está belíssima neste filme), John Malkovich e Campbell Scott. Gosto muito da música, da interpretação dos atores, do figurino, do cenário, da fotografia. Já assisti a este filme muitas vezes... A música composta por Ryuichi Sakamoto é incrivelmente bela! Eu recomendo com entusiasmo para aqueles que ainda não viram este filme.

The Sheltering Sky is a 1990 British-Italian drama film based on the 1949 novel by the writer Paul Bowles (who narrates the film and appears in a cameo role) about a couple who journey to northern Africa in the hopes of rekindling their marriage but soon fall prey to the dangers that surround them. Three Americans from New York arrive in Tangier in 1947. Port Moresby (John Malkovich) and his wife Kit (Debra Winger) are accompanied by their friend George Tunner (Campbell Scott) on a trip that will take them deep into the Sahara Desert. Tunner observes, "We're probably the first tourists they've had since the war" to which Kit replies, "We're not tourists. We're travelers." While Tunner plans to return home in a few weeks, Port and Kit plan on staying for a year or two.
O Céu que nos Protege é um filme ítalo-britânico de 1990, do gênero drama, baseado na novela escrita em 1949 pelo escritor Paul Bowles (que narra o filme a aparece em pequenas cenas).  O filme narra a história de um casal que viaja para o norte da África na esperança de reacender o seu casamento. Os três norte-americanos de Nova Iorque chegam a Tânger em 1947. Port Moresby (John Malkovich) e sua esposa Kit (Debra Winger) são acompanhados pelo amigo George Tunner (Campbell Scott) em uma viagem que irá levá-los a conhecer as remotas regiões do deserto do Saara. Tunner observa: "Nós somos provavelmente os primeiros turistas após a guerra". Ao que Kit responde: "Nós não somos turistas, somos viajantes". Enquanto Tunner planeja voltar para casa em poucas semanas, Port e Kit pretendem ficar por um ano ou dois.

Socrates (c. 469–399 BC) was a classical Greek Athenian philosopher. One of the best known sayings of Socrates is "I only know that I know nothing". Knowing the frugality of Socrates' way of life, a friend was surprised to discover the philosopher studying with rapt attention some flashy wares on display in the marketplace. He inquired why Socrates came to the market, since he never bought anything. "I am always amazed to see just how many things there are that I don't need," replied Socrates.
Sócrates (c. 469-399 BC) foi um filósofo clássico grego, nascido em Licabeto, próximo a Atenas. Uma de suas mais célebres frases é: "Eu só sei que nada sei". Conhecendo a frugalidade do modo de vida de Sócrates, um amigo ficou surpreso ao descobrir o filósofo olhando com muita atenção mercadorias chamativas expostas no mercado. Ele então perguntou por que Sócrates estava no mercado, já que ele nunca comprava nada. "Eu fico sempre surpreso ao ver quantas coisas há que eu não preciso", respondeu Sócrates.

GREEK MOSAIC ... MOSAICO GREGO...



Krokalia is a decorative mosaic of black and white pebbles that are used in patterns both inside and outside the houses, tradicional on Rhodes, Greece. Unique to the island of Rhodes, these beautiful pebble mosaics adorn much of the village of Lindos.   Mainly constructed of black and white pebbles, though red is sometimes seen, this art form also serves a practical purpose by cooling surface temperatures when wet with water.

Krokalia é o nome dado ao mosaico decorativo feito com seixos brancos e pretos, tradicionalmente encontrados adornando os interiores e exteriores das casas da ilha de Rhodes, na Grécia. Esses belos mosaicos de pedras decoram muitas casas da cidade de Lindos e seu uso refresca a temperatura do ambiente, quando são molhados com água.
